Researchers revealed hidden immune system changes in the blood that can appear up to ten years before a patient receives an inflammatory bowel disease diagnosis. Science Daily reported that scientists presented the study results at United European Gastroenterology Week 2026. The findings show that distinct antibody patterns in blood samples can predict future disease development. [1]

The study identified specific antibody patterns that help predict whether an individual will develop Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Science Daily noted that these blood markers can also distinguish people who are at risk of developing more complicated forms of the disease. [1]

As FTMQ Health reported earlier, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis represent the primary forms of inflammatory bowel disease. Medical professionals usually treat inflammatory bowel disease only after symptoms appear and physical gut damage has already occurred. [2]
