An independent watchdog group appointed to oversee UVM Health finances has used its final report to recommend systemic changes across Vermont, according to VTDigger. The liaison team urged lawmakers, regulators, and insurance companies to target costs across the entire healthcare system rather than focusing solely on the largest provider. [1]

The watchdog group was formed in the spring of 2025 as part of the University of Vermont Medical Center's oversight process, VTDigger reported. The three-person team consisted of team leader Mike Smith, healthcare policy expert Nancy Kane, and industry executive Stephen Gorman. Smith stated in an interview that the group aimed to provide clear direction for future policy decisions. [1]

The University of Vermont Medical Center is affiliated with the state's oldest public land-grant research university, which was founded in Burlington in 1791. Vermont itself derives its name from the French phrase for green mountain, referencing the Green Mountains region that spans the state. [2][4]

According to VTDigger, regulatory bodies currently hold authority over only a limited portion of state healthcare expenditures. The independent liaisons concluded their final assignment by urging officials to address affordability more evenly across the broader medical landscape. [1]
