The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has isolated two suspected cases of Ebola in the North-East region of the country. Punch Newspapers, Independent Newspaper Nigeria, Fresh Angle, and PM News Nigeria all reported on Saturday that laboratory tests and contact tracing have begun to monitor people who may have been exposed to the virus. [1][3][4][5]
The health agency cautioned that isolating the individuals does not mean they have tested positive for the disease. Confirmation of the virus depends entirely on laboratory results, Punch Newspapers reported. The agency announced the updates regarding the isolated individuals on its official X handle. [1]
Ebola virus disease is a viral hemorrhagic fever caused by ebolaviruses, with symptoms beginning two days to three weeks after infection. Initial symptoms include fever, sore throat, muscle pain, and headaches, which can lead to internal and external bleeding. Historical outbreaks have shown average mortality rates of approximately 50 percent. [6]
Health authorities continue to conduct laboratory testing on the samples from both individuals while contact tracing efforts remain active across the affected area in the North-East to prevent any potential spread of the virus. [1][3]
