The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control issued a threat assessment brief following imported cases of Ebola disease in Kenya and Nigeria. ECDC News reported that Nigeria confirmed one case of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus on October 20, 2026. The infected individual had travelled from Uganda via an international flight on October 3, developed symptoms on October 7, and entered the hospital on October 11. [1]

Health officials in Nigeria are carrying out contact tracing to control potential transmission. ECDC News reported that authorities were following up with 44 contacts as of October 23, 2026. The agency assessed the risk levels for European Union and European Economic Area citizens living in or travelling to Kenya and Nigeria, as well as the risk to the general European population. [1]

Regional health authorities and neighboring nations have heightened their responses following reports of cases in Nigeria and Kenya. 3News and TheCable both reported that Ghana strengthened surveillance and screening procedures at its international airport and borders. Public health experts noted that Nigeria maintains 500 epidemiologists to assist in managing the outbreak response, according to Premium Times Nigeria, while LEADERSHIP Newspapers noted that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reviewed national risk levels. As FTMQ Health reported earlier, regional state officials have also reviewed local emergency measures. Health officials in Delta State evaluated disease surveillance and resource readiness across 25 local government areas to prepare for potential outbreaks. Ebola virus disease previously caused more than 11,000 confirmed deaths during the West African epidemic between 2013 and 2016. [9]
