Measles cases in Pennsylvania have risen to 1,286 across 42 counties, according to The Sunday Guardian. The state health department reported that five deaths have occurred during the outbreak. The virus has now affected 46 states across the United States. [1]
Health officials are expanding vaccination efforts across Pennsylvania to curb the spread of the virus, The Sunday Guardian reported. Earlier reporting by FTMQ Health noted that the current outbreak is the largest in Pennsylvania in over 30 years, with 198 hospitalisations recorded. [1][6]
The United States declared measles eliminated in 2000 following successful vaccination efforts. However, the virus is repeatedly reintroduced by unvaccinated travellers returning from places where measles remains present, while vaccine hesitancy and anti-vaccine activism continue to fuel public outbreaks. [3][4]
The Pennsylvania outbreak has also spread beyond state borders. As FTMQ Health reported earlier, health officials in Georgia confirmed a measles case in Macon County linked directly to contact with a confirmed case from Pennsylvania, bringing Georgia to 22 cases for the year. [5]
