Florida state health officials reported nearly 300 locally acquired cases of dengue fever so far this year, according to Medical Xpress. The surge represents the largest dengue outbreak in any United States state in several decades. The vast majority of the reported cases were located in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa. [1]

Medical Xpress reported that available records from state health departments and medical journals indicate the current outbreak marks the highest annual case count for any state since at least the 1940s. Federal health officials noted that their data regarding past dengue outbreaks remains limited. Authorities noted that while Puerto Rico regularly records much higher case totals, Florida has surpassed counts seen in the continental states. [1]

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness. Worldwide, the disease is estimated to infect 50 to 100 million people each year, causing approximately 500,000 life-threatening infections. Global cases increased 30-fold between 1960 and 2010. Experts attribute this growth to urbanization, population growth, international travel, and global warming, with roughly 70 percent of exposed populations living in endemic areas across Asia and the Pacific. [2]

The geography of Florida includes low-lying plains and a subtropical to tropical climate that provides year-round warmth. These environmental conditions exist alongside widespread viral risks. During dengue outbreaks, many patients do not receive viral testing, meaning some cases may stem from or involve coinfections with similar pathogens like chikungunya virus. [2][3]
