Missing doses of blood pressure medication significantly diminishes its protective effects against strokes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular complications, SSBCrack reported. The finding comes from new research presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2026. [1]
Antihypertensive medications have proven benefits for reducing cardiovascular risks, according to SSBCrack. However, nearly half of all patients do not adhere to their prescribed treatment plan. Approximately 1.4 billion adults globally aged 30 to 79 are affected by high blood pressure. [1]
Arterial blood pressure measures circulating pressure in the body and is commonly recorded in millimetres of mercury. Doctors historically used mercury-filled sphygmomanometers to take these measurements, although modern electronic and aneroid devices do not contain mercury. [3]
As FTMQ Health reported earlier, medical researchers continue to look for ways to help manage persistent high blood pressure alongside standard daily medications. A clinical trial evaluating a small home device for ear nerve stimulation in 63 patients taking medication found the device was safe and easy to use, though it did not beat a placebo overall. [5]
In short
- Nearly half of patients prescribed blood pressure medication do not take it as directed.
- About 1.4 billion adults aged 30 to 79 live with high blood pressure globally.
- Missing medication doses significantly reduces protection against strokes and heart attacks.
