Maternity units across the United States are facing widespread closures as federal cuts to Medicaid funding take effect. The Guardian Health reported that experts are warning of severe hospital strains ahead of the full implementation of the cuts next year. According to analysis by the non-profit group Protect Our Care, 52 maternity wards have closed since the HR1 bill was announced in July 2025, and another eight have announced plans to close. [1]

The legislative changes will fully come into effect in the new year. The Guardian Health reported that the bill will require many adults covered by Medicaid to meet new work requirements and face more frequent checks on their eligibility status, which is placing immediate financial pressure on health systems. [1]

Medicaid funds a wide array of medical services, including hospital care, physician visits, and preventive services. Federal funding makes up the majority of Medicaid expenditures, which reached 931.7 billion dollars in 2024. The program represents an average of 28.8 percent of state budgets. Racial and ethnic health disparities also persist across the United States healthcare system, where different health outcomes stem from socioeconomic factors, historical influences, and varied access to care. [2][3]

The reduction in funded services threatens to exacerbate existing geographic gaps in maternal healthcare. The Guardian Health reported that health experts view the loss of local maternity services as an immediate crisis for patients who rely on Medicaid funding for prenatal and childbirth care. [1]
