Longer-term consumption of unsalted, skin-roasted peanuts can benefit insulin responsiveness in the brains of older adults, Medical Xpress reported. The study was conducted by researchers at the Institute of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands. The findings were published in the journal Food & Function. [1]

Brain insulin responsiveness plays an important role in metabolic health as people age. The study evaluated how adding unsalted, skin-roasted peanuts to the daily diet affects brain insulin sensitivity over an extended period. Researchers found that regular dietary intake produced beneficial effects on brain insulin action among older study participants. [1]

Peanuts are legumes rather than true nuts, which distinguishes them from tree nuts. Although peanuts offer potential health benefits, peanut allergy remains a common food allergy that can trigger allergic symptoms across the skin, respiratory, gastrointestinal, or cardiovascular systems within two hours of ingestion. [2]

Severe allergic reactions to peanuts can result in anaphylaxis, though the overall risk of death from peanut-induced anaphylaxis is low at approximately 1 in 10 million. Further clinical research will continue to examine how specific dietary patterns influence metabolic and brain health in aging populations. [1][2]
