Healthcare research lacks consistent standards for reporting intervention acceptability

A review of studies published since 2017 shows growing use of the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability alongside inconsistent definitions and missing data.

Researchers reviewing healthcare intervention studies found widespread inconsistency in how scientists define, measure, and report whether patients accept medical interventions. Bioengineer.org reported that the scoping review examined studies published from 2017 through July 2025 across six biomedical and clinical trial databases. The full findings were published in the journal BMC Health Services Research. [1]

The review tracked the application of the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability across patient-facing intervention research. According to Bioengineer.org, while the use of this framework is growing, the specific details needed to compare results across different studies were frequently absent or inconsistently presented. [1]

Academic peer review is the standard process where experts evaluate a researcher's methods and findings before publication. Journal publishers use peer review to determine whether a study should be accepted, revised, or rejected. In some instances, journals use a dual-anonymous peer review process where the identities of authors and reviewers remain hidden from each other. [2]

In short

  • Researchers searched six biomedical databases for healthcare studies published between 2017 and July 2025.
  • The Theoretical Framework of Acceptability is increasingly used in patient-facing healthcare research.
  • Many healthcare studies fail to report sufficient detail to allow comparison of intervention acceptability.
