At least 159 recruits at the Air Force basic training facility in San Antonio, Texas, have contracted influenza, ABC News reported. Two sources familiar with the situation stated that at least two recruits have been hospitalized at Lackland Air Force Base at Joint Base San Antonio as of Wednesday. [1][2]

One source told ABC News that the total count of cases and hospitalizations among the recruits may be higher than the initial figures. The cases emerged following a military policy change earlier in the year. [1]

The outbreak follows a decision by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in April to make the annual influenza vaccine optional for all United States service members, according to ABC News. [1]

Joint Base San Antonio includes JBSA-Lackland, which was established in 1941 and conducts basic military training for all enlisted Air Force personnel through the 37th Training Wing. [3]
