Women with autoimmune conditions are more likely than men to be told their symptoms are psychosomatic and face longer delays before receiving an accurate diagnosis, PULSE Today reported. The findings come from a survey of 6,607 human patients with autoimmune diseases. [1][2]

According to PULSE Today, 43 percent of female patients in the study reported that healthcare providers had previously misattributed their autoimmune symptoms to a psychiatric cause. The study examined sex differences in the diagnostic experiences of individuals seeking medical care for these conditions. [1]

The research was published in The Lancet eClinicalMedicine, PULSE Today reported. As FTMQ Health reported earlier, scientists recognize more than 80 distinct autoimmune diseases, and the study examining patient experiences was led by researchers from the University of Cambridge and the University of East Anglia.
