Cancer diagnoses in England reached a record high in 2024, according to NHS figures reported by The Guardian Health. Health service data shows that more than 373,000 people were diagnosed with cancer in England during the year, averaging 1,021 diagnoses each day. The Guardian Health, The Guardian, The Independent, and The Mirror all report that daily diagnoses have exceeded 1,000 people. [1][2][3][4]

The 2024 figure marks an increase from 2023, when an average of 972 people were diagnosed each day, The Guardian Health reported. The most common cancer types identified include prostate, breast, and lung cancers. Experts warned that while NHS England is identifying more cases, it is failing to meet target timescales for diagnosing and treating patients. [1]

Globally, cancer places a substantial burden on populations and healthcare systems. Grokipedia notes that an estimated 20 million new cases were diagnosed worldwide in 2022, resulting in 9.7 million deaths. Projections indicate a 77 percent increase in global cancer cases by the year 2050, driven by population growth, aging, and lifestyle factors. In the United States, approximately 2,041,910 new cases are expected in 2025. [6]

As FTMQ Health reported earlier, early onset diagnoses of bowel, kidney, and uterine cancer in England have more than doubled since 2001, while prostate cancer diagnoses among people under 50 have quadrupled. Modern classifications recognize over 100 distinct types of cancer, categorized by their tissue of origin. [6][8]
