The drugs charity Kaleidoscope has reported a dramatic rise in referrals for ketamine detox and rehabilitation over the past five years. The BBC Health and Yahoo both reported that the charity received two referrals in 2021 compared with 112 so far in 2026. The majority of clients accessing the service are between 18 and 24 years old. [1][2]

According to the BBC Health, young users are suffering severe physical harm from chronic ketamine consumption, including severe bladder problems that leave some individuals requiring incontinence pads. One client named Megan started using the drug at age 14 and required rehabilitation and adult nappies by age 22 after experiencing two years of severe pain. [1]

Researchers at the University of South Wales have launched a study into the specific needs of young ketamine users. The BBC Health stated that chronic and escalating ketamine use causes physical damage far more rapidly and over a shorter period than alcohol or Class A substances. [1]

Existing treatment services have traditionally been designed for older adults. The ongoing research at the University of South Wales aims to address how services can better support younger demographics facing rapid health deterioration from ketamine. [1]
