The administration of President Donald Trump is expanding a Medicaid initiative that allows states to provide select health care services to incarcerated people shortly before their release, Newsweek reported. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services approved new Section 1115 reentry demonstrations for Louisiana, Minnesota, Maine, and Nevada. [1]

Newsweek reported that federal officials also renewed the broader Medicaid demonstration for Washington, D.C., while granting the district specific authority to cover prerelease services. The new approvals officially took effect on October 1 and are set to run through September 30, 2031. [1]

Alex Beene, a financial literacy instructor at the University of Tennessee at Martin, told Newsweek that the policy addresses health concerns that extend beyond common political divisions. The policy builds on a framework initially developed during the Biden administration. [1]

The action follows other recent federal health initiatives. As FTMQ Health reported earlier, President Donald Trump previously announced a one-time 90 dollar payment for more than 20 million seniors enrolled in Medicare. [1][2]
