A nationwide Swedish study presented at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology annual congress has raised doubts about whether taking folic acid supplements reduces the risk of suicide attempts. Medical Xpress reported that the research shows vitamin B9 supplementation affects different sexes and age groups differently. [1]

Folate, which is also known as vitamin B9 or folacin, is an essential nutrient that the human body cannot make on its own. It is required for the body to make DNA and RNA, as well as to metabolize amino acids necessary for cell division and the maturation of blood cells. The nutrient occurs naturally in many foods. [2]

Manufactured folic acid is converted into folate by the body. It is widely used in dietary supplements and food fortification because it remains more stable during food processing and storage than naturally occurring folate. The recommended adult daily intake in the United States is 400 micrograms from foods or supplements. [2]

The new findings challenge earlier research that suggested taking folic acid supplements might reduce the risk of suicide attempts. Medical Xpress reported that the researchers presented their nationwide findings to highlight the complex and differing impacts of supplementation across various demographic groups. [1]
