Six in 10 parents experience sensory overload, according to a nationwide survey of 1,000 U.S. parents from Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago reported by Medical Xpress. The survey revealed that overstimulation occurred most frequently inside the home, as well as in retail stores and inside vehicles. [1]

Medical Xpress reported that the primary triggers identified by parents included children arguing or whining, fighting between siblings, loud noise, continuous talking, and physical clutter. The study showed that parents caring for younger children were affected at higher rates than those with older children. [1]

Specifically, 70% of parents who have a child under five years old reported experiencing overstimulation, compared to 56% of parents who have older children. Researchers noted that although parental overstimulation often feels like an isolated personal struggle, the survey demonstrates how widespread the issue is across households. [1]

Parental stress and emotional strain have been an ongoing focus of public health research. As FTMQ Health reported earlier, previous research published in 2026 by Katherine M. Ryan and colleagues examined how parental burnout leads to severe exhaustion and emotional distancing, particularly among families under stress. [5]
