The French pharmaceutical company Servier announced on November 3, 2026, that an experimental drug intended to treat a rare form of muscular dystrophy failed its trial. STAT News reported that the drug, named sevasemten, did not slow the progression of Becker muscular dystrophy in a long placebo controlled trial. [1]
According to STAT News, the outcome of the study, named the GRAND CANYON study, was unexpected because the drug had previously shown promising results in a smaller randomized trial. Servier stated that the results from this pivotal trial were not aligned with findings from earlier clinical studies. [1]
The drug was originally developed by Edgewise Therapeutics before Servier acquired it in June for 1.55 billion dollars in cash, alongside up to 1 billion dollars in potential milestone payments. Patients diagnosed with Becker muscular dystrophy currently have no approved treatment options available to them. [1]
Servier Laboratories is an international pharmaceutical company with headquarters located in Suresnes, France. It was founded by Jacques Servier and is governed by a non profit foundation. [2]
