Ultra processed foods show no overall link to colorectal cancer risk
A prospective study from PLOS Medicine found overall ultra-processed food intake was not linked to colorectal cancer incidence, pointing to specific nutrients rather than processing.

Overall consumption of ultra-processed foods was not associated with colorectal cancer incidence, PLOS Medicine reported on October 15, 2026. Researchers Leila Abar and colleagues examined ultra-processed food intake in a large prospective human cohort known as the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. [1]
The findings suggest that the specific nutritional composition of food products may be more relevant to disease risk than the level of processing alone. Ultra-processed foods currently account for more than 50 percent of the daily energy intake of adults in the United States, according to PLOS Medicine. [1]
The study authors noted that ultra-processed diets contain varied components with contrasting health effects. Certain foods categorized as ultra-processed, such as whole grains and dairy products, are linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer, whereas other items like processed meats are associated with a higher risk, PLOS Medicine reported. [1]
The findings build on broader public health discussions regarding early detection and dietary risks. As FTMQ Health reported earlier, colorectal cancer is frequently diagnosed at advanced stages in younger individuals, where symptoms like rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, and bowel changes are often overlooked. [1][11]
In short
- A prospective study found no overall association between ultra-processed food intake and colorectal cancer incidence.
- Ultra-processed foods account for over 50 percent of total energy intake among adults in the United States.
- Nutritional components like whole grains are linked to lower cancer risk, while processed meats are linked to higher risk.
