Japan sees long term drop in liver cancer mortality

Sustained national control of viral hepatitis in Japan has led to significant reductions in hepatitis B and C disease burdens and liver cancer deaths.

Japan has achieved major reductions in the disease burden of chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C following decades of integrated national control measures. EurekAlert and Medical Xpress both reported that these systematic public health efforts led to substantial declines in hepatocellular carcinoma mortality across the country. [1][2]

According to EurekAlert, a study led by Junko Tanaka analyzed cancer mortality trends in Japan between 1958 and 2022. The data showed that liver cancer mortality rose until the early 2000s before beginning a continuous decline. This downward trend contrasted with ongoing increases in mortality rates for several other major cancers over the same period. [1]

Chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections are primary causes of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, Medical Xpress reported. Chronic hepatitis involves inflammation of the liver tissue that lasts longer than six months and can progress to severe scarring or liver failure. [2][4][5]

To address the heavy public health burden, Japan implemented systematic nationwide programs to control viral hepatitis infections, according to Medical Xpress. The findings from the long term study were published in The Lancet Regional Health Western Pacific. [1][2]
